Used for thousands of years
Hippocrates and Dioscorides described this special herb thousands of years ago. The herb is also included in the 'Canon of Medicine' (Al-Qanun fi al-Tibb) by the 11th century Persian scientist Avicenna (Ibn Sina). During the European Middle Ages, the book was one of the standard medical works, along with the works of Galenus.
Black color of N. sativa
The Nigella sativa plant has finely divided foliage and bluish to purple, or white, flowers. The fruit is large and contains many small seeds. Once the fruit has reached maturity, it opens and the seeds contained therein, now exposed to the air, turn black in color. The beneficial properties of black cumin are widely appreciated: currently the herb has five separate FDA patents in the United States and one in the United Kingdom.
Worldwide traditional use
The seeds of N. sativa have been traditionally used in Southeast Asia and the Middle East for centuries at least. Due to its many uses, Nigella sativa has been given the Arabic title 'Habbatul barakah' meaning 'the seed of blessing'. Furthermore, the herb is included in various authoritative lists of used herbs, including the Tibb-e-Nabawi (Prophet Mohammed), the Unani Tebb, and Ayurveda.
